What symptoms should I look for?

The way the vehicle behaves helps a specialist narrow down the fault. Make a note of when it happens, whether the gearbox is cold or warm, and whether a warning appears.

• a long pause before acceleration
• changing down only in manual mode
• restricted power or limp mode

What can cause this automatic gearbox problem?

Modern automatic transmissions rely on hydraulic pressure, electronic signals, clutch operation and accurate speed information. A problem in one area can affect the whole shift process.

Tell the technician whether the fault changes with temperature, road speed, hills, traffic, acceleration or vehicle load. Those details can be as valuable as the warning code itself.

Is the car safe to drive?

Avoid overtaking or joining fast roads if acceleration is unpredictable.

Stop and ask about recovery if the vehicle loses Drive or Reverse, slips badly, overheats, smells burnt or becomes difficult to control.
